Teacher Impacts

Boundless Readers impacts teachers by increasing both the implementation of research-based literacy best practices in their classrooms (including quality, quantity and breadth of best-practice use) and the use of authentic children’s literature for instruction.

Our evaluation has shown that compared to all Chicago public school teachers and to our own wait list comparison groups, Boundless Readers teachers are more likely to use research-validated literacy practices including:
  • Read aloud to their students, especially older students,
  • Provide students independent reading time and choice of books, and
  • Use authentic children literature as their primary teaching resource.

We also know the following about teachers who participate in a Boundless Readers program:
  • The amount of time devoted to literacy instruction increased 20 minutes for the median teacher;
  • The percent of time discussing meaning of text increased from 15% to 20% -- a 33% increase;
  • 49% of teachers report using the program’s literature discussion techniques in other subject areas besides reading; and
  • The percent of time using real children’s literature increased from 40% to 50% -- a 25% increase.
