Reading for Deeper Meaning: RDM
Reading for Deeper Meaning (RDM) supports Chicago public school teachers in grades 6 – 8. Teachers participate in and reflect upon the discussion process to incorporate a "curriculum of talk" into their classroom literacy program.
Using children's literature, RDM offers teachers the opportunity to develop as skilled facilitators of discussion that will deepen student understanding and comprehension beyond the literal level. Teachers receive approximately $850 (retail value) in children's books to support discussion in their classrooms.
The importance of the teacher’s role as a reader and knowledgeable facilitator, cognizant of how to guide students to think beyond first responses in order to reach deeper levels of meaning, cannot be overstated.
The popular and well-regarded Reading for Deeper Meaning (RDM) program has been put on hiatus while it is adapted for a re-launch in 2010.
