RLTA: Classroom Libraries
Boundless Readers believes that classroom libraries consisting of thought-provoking children’s books from which to choose, time to read every day, and the opportunity to take books home are essential to developing children’s reading ability, habit, and independence. Children need daily access to books in a variety of interest areas and at a range of reading levels.
Additionally, classroom libraries serve as the cornerstone of teachers’ literacy instruction. RLTA individual participants receive approximately $500 in new books for their classroom libraries while RLTA study group participants receive about $850.
Before teachers select and order books, they spend a minimum of four hours reviewing and researching children’s books in our Rochelle Lee Review Library. It is an opportunity to review current children’s books and determine the portfolio of books that is most appropriate for their students.
Teachers select books to support new instructional practices learned through Boundless Readers professional development. The depth of Boundless Readers professional development coupled with the provision of books for the classroom are critical to the organization’s approach and success.
RLTA teachers receive training and follow-up mentoring from alumni participants on how to organize an attractive, accessible, and inviting classroom library that will motivate students to read.
