Supporting Young Adolescent Literacy: SYAL
Supporting Young Adolescent Literacy (SYAL) program develops Chicago public school teachers of grades 6-8.  It is designed for all middle school teachers at a school, including teachers of science, math, and social studies.

Teachers participate in a cohesive program of literacy study throughout the school year that focuses on reading across the curriculum. Teachers develop literacy knowledge and skills so they can guide middle school students in all areas of literacy development including comprehension, reading response, and writing.  Teachers learn how to use authentic student work to assess learning, differentiate instruction based on student need and interest, and use writing as a response to reading.

Opportunities for coaching, peer observation, and videotaping classroom practice provide teachers with multiple ways to reflect on and improve their classroom practices.  All SYAL teachers participate in school-based, teacher-led study groups.

Principals and Assistant Principals are engaged throughout the year to ensure they understand the Boundless Readers approach and can best support their teachers’ professional development.

The SYAL program is on hiatus for the 2009-10 school year.
